Agnes Brandon, age 106, of Washington, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at Strabane Woods.
Agnes was born on Friday, October 24, 1919, in the district of Hamilton/Glasgow, Scotland, to William and Annie Scott. At four years of age, in October 1923, Agnes and her mother boarded the SS Baltic in Liverpool, England, and sailed to Halifax, Canada. They entered the United States through Buffalo, New York, where they were met by her father, William, who had come ahead to work at U.S. Steel in Donora, Pennsylvania.
Agnes grew up in Donora and graduated from Donora High School in 1938.
After graduation she became a licensed hairdresser. She spent most of her
life as a homemaker, devoted to her family. On February 7, 1942, she married her high-school sweetheart, Charles Brandon, they were married 62 years until his passing on October 20, 2004.
Agnes was a lifelong resident of Washington County and North Strabane
Township until 1979, when she and Charles retired to Punta Gorda, Florida.
After his death she returned to Washington County to be near family and
friends. She loved her family dearly and shared a special connection with her
grandson Conner; they were born 100 years apart. For the past twenty years
she lived in the Strabane Trails and Strabane Woods community, where many
residents and staff became her extended family.
She belonged to the Greatest Generation and lived through the Great
Depression, World War II, the Donora Smog, Hurricane Charley, the 1918-19
influenza pandemic, the 2020 COVID pandemic, and the loss of family and
friends who went before her.
Agnes had a strong faith in the Lord and trusted Him daily. She lived with a
heart of gratitude and peace. No matter what she was going through, she
encouraged others with her faith and never complained. At the end her tiny
little body was quite worn out. We know she is at peace now with her Maker.
Agnes is survived by two daughters, Charlotte Ulm (Edgar) of Encinitas,
California, and Cynthia (Richard) of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania; four
grandchildren, David Trent Ulm, Richard C. (Mary) Crowley, Scott Crowley
(Stacy Dubina), and Nathan Crowley (Zach Stauring); and five great-grandchildren, Aidan Crowley, Aine Crowley, Brandon Crowley/Liokareas,
Kendall Crowley/Liokareas, and Conner Crowley.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Annie Scott; her
husband, Charles Brandon; a brother, Thomas Scott; a daughter, Carol Ann
Brandon; and a granddaughter, Janelle Ulm, a son-in-law Edgar Ulm.
Deep thanks to the staff of UPMC Strabane Community and Gateway
Hospice, who cared for her so beautifully.
No viewing or visitation will be held in accordance with her wishes. A celebration of life is being planned. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Mon Valley Memorial Park.
