Obituary

Tamara Smith, affectionately known as "Oma", 95, of Charleroi, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, October 13, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Born and raised in Leonburg, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Johann and Berta Zitalu Laun. In 1952, she journeyed to the United States through Ellis Island, where she began a new chapter of life and love. A devoted military wife, Oma faithfully supported her husband's service. She took great pride in the strength, patience, and dedication that life required, along with the love of raising six children.

Family was always at the heart of everything she did. Oma's life revolved around her loved ones, and she especially treasured the laughter and warmth of family gatherings, especially their Christmas Eve tradition. In recent years, she delighted in a new holiday tradition with her grandchildren—sharing a toast of Fireball at Christmas, a symbol of their close bond. Oma lived a full and active life. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and took pride in maintaining her home—still mowing her own lawn well into her 80s.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Smith (1994); her children, Jane K. (Frank) Hnatik, Charles "Snuffy" Smith, Robert W. "Smitty" Smith, and Tamara (Gerald) McKosky; a grandson, Frank Hnatik; and several brothers and sisters.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Olga Smith of Charleroi and Jimmy (Carol) Smith of California, PA; daughters-in-law, Debbie Smith of Donora and Penny Smith of Speers; grandchildren, Holly Hoak, Jason Smith, Peter McKosky, Justin Smith, Kaley Madison, Jonathan Smith, and Haley White; 14 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Oma's devoted caregivers, Aislinn, Rachel, Rosella and the hospice staff from Vitas for their kindness, compassion, and exceptional care during her final days.

At Oma's request, there will be no viewing or services. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Anthony L. Massafra Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Inc., 40 Second St. Ext., Carroll Township/Donora, PA 15033, (724) 379-6900.
